Elizabeth and Jocelyn are the founders of Beneath the Surface. Here are questions answered about them and the story behind Beneath the Surface ministry.
How did you become friends and why a girl’s conference?
Good question! We really do not remember being introduced. We went to the same church for years and had mutual friends but really had nothing in common and never talked. Our senior year of high school we both participated in a local speech club. We ended up duo partners. Because of the hours of practice, the traveling, the winning and losing we found we did have something in common; a deep desire to serve Jesus Christ and our love for people, especially high school aged girls.
A year later, we noticed the lack of events for high school girls especially, mother-daughter events. We are fully convinced of the importance of this relationship and decided to do something about it. The idea of a conference for girls and their moms began to form. It was a great idea…we both love great ideas and have them often. (The reasonableness of the “idea” is often questioned.) We decided to go to

| our parents. We were sure that they would be the voice of sanity, reminding us that we were just out of high school, knew nothing about running a conference, and quickly put an end to our madness.
To our surprise, both families thought it was a fabulous idea and encouraged us to act. We didn’t know how long, how far, when, where, why or how; but we knew it was what the Lord wanted us to do. God has proven His faithfulness again and again in incredible ways. He has brought just the right people at just the right time, checks in the mail for the exact amount just hours before we needed it, and churches willing and able to open their facility. Because of the full support and enthusiasm of our families and closest friends, God’s amazing mercy, and daily miracles—Beneath the Surface became a reality.
